Young artists with disabilities were honored alongside state education officials and elected leaders at the annual Special Education Day awards ceremony, held at the Hyatt Regency in Princeton. Hosted by ASAH, a nonprofit association representing New Jersey’s private special education schools and agencies, the event celebrated the academic excellence and artistic achievements of approximately 10,000 students with disabilities served by its member schools.
The celebration followed Governor Phil Murphy’s April 4, 2025, proclamation recognizing the vital contributions of educators, school boards, agencies and parents who support special education in New Jersey. Part of a longstanding tradition, the proclamation commemorates Special Education Week – an initiative sponsored by the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) and ASAH since 1985.
Students were recognized by age group, with first, second and third place winners receiving framed certificates and cash prizes. A grand prize – featuring a framed poster and a check – was presented to the top overall artist, Catherine M. of Holmstead School in Ridgewood.
“Each year, this event reminds us of the transformative impact these programs have on our students, their parents, teachers and communities – empowering talented young artists to explore their creativity, develop new skills and thrive,” said Stephanie Summers, External Affairs Director at ASAH. “Congratulations to all of our incredible winners!”
ASAH was joined by prominent leaders in New Jersey’s education landscape, including New Jersey Department of Education Commissioner Kevin Dehmer and Assistant Commissioner Kathleen Ehling, State Board of Education President Kathy Goldenberg and Member Mary G. Bennett and Office of Special Education Director Kim Murray.
